Shopify or WooCommerce?
This choice shapes your running costs and how much you look after yourself. We build on both, so we have no reason to push one.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and updates | Handled by Shopify | Your responsibility, or a care plan’s |
| Monthly cost | A subscription, plus paid apps | Hosting, plus paid plugins |
| Control | Less control, within Shopify’s limits | Full control of the code and data |
| Best when | You want to focus on selling and avoid technical upkeep | You already run WordPress or need unusual features |
We compared three-year costs in Shopify vs WooCommerce in Canada.
Selling from Canada: what has to be right
- Sales tax. HST, GST and PST differ by province. Your store has to charge the right rate based on where the order ships. We set the store up, and your accountant should confirm what you’re required to collect.
- Payments. We connect Stripe, PayPal or another gateway that suits your business. Each one charges its own transaction fees.
- Shipping. Flat rates, free-shipping thresholds, local pickup or live carrier rates. We set up whichever matches your margins.
- Store policies. Refund, shipping and privacy pages need to exist and be easy to find. You’re responsible for their content, and we’ll make sure they’re in place.
- Customer email. Canada’s anti-spam law applies to marketing email. Our email marketing page explains consent.
Product pages decide the sale
A shopper can’t touch your product. The page has to answer everything they’d ask in person. So we plan each product page around five things:
- Photos that show scale, detail and use. Growth includes 15 edited photos, and we can shoot more.
- A description written for buyers. Your manufacturer’s text appears on every other store, so it gives Google and shoppers no reason to choose you.
- Clear price, stock and shipping. Surprise costs at checkout lose sales.
- Reviews and trust details. Real reviews, returns information and contact details.
- Structured data. Product schema helps search engines read price and availability.
Collections matter too. If yours aren’t appearing in search, read why a Shopify collection may not be indexing.
How a store project runs
- Plan. We go through your products, margins, shipping and goals, then recommend a platform and package.
- Written quote. Products, features, revision rounds, timeline and third-party costs, in writing.
- Product data. You send names, prices, variants, photos and stock numbers. A clean spreadsheet saves everyone time.
- Design and build. Homepage, collections, product pages, cart and checkout.
- Test orders. We run real test purchases: payment, tax, shipping, confirmation emails and refunds.
- Launch and training. You learn how to add products, process orders and issue refunds.
After launch
A new store has no traffic of its own. Plan for how people will find it. For most small shops, that’s a mix of Google Shopping and search ads, Facebook and Instagram ads, SEO and email to past customers. Our tracking setup shows which channel produces sales. WooCommerce stores also need regular updates, which our maintenance page covers.
Questions about online stores
How long does an online store take?
Five days for Starter, 8 to 10 business days for Growth and 10 to 14 for Ultimate, once your product information is ready. Late product data is the most common cause of delay.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We move products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it, and redirect old URLs so you keep your search traffic. Quoted per project.
What are the monthly costs after launch?
On Shopify, a subscription plus any paid apps. On WooCommerce, hosting plus any paid plugins. Payment providers take a fee per sale on both. We list your expected costs before you commit.
Can I sell in other languages or currencies?
Yes. That’s part of Ultimate. See multilingual websites for how we set up languages so Google can index them.
Do you add products for me after launch?
You can do it yourself after training. If you’d rather not, we can quote ongoing product updates.
Ready to sell online?
Tell us what you sell and roughly how many products you have. We’ll recommend a platform and a package, with all running costs listed.
