Google Business Profile optimization in Halifax

When someone in HRM searches “near me,” the map pack decides who gets the call. Your Google Business Profile is the listing behind that map pin. We set it up properly, keep it inside Google’s rules, and keep it active so it keeps working for you.

How Google ranks local profiles

Google says local results are based mainly on three things (Google Business Profile Help):

Relevance

How well your profile matches the search. Complete, accurate details help Google match you to the right searches.

Distance

How far you are from the searcher or the place in the search. You can’t change it. You can make sure Google knows exactly where you are and what area you serve.

Prominence

How well known you are. Google names links, articles, directories, review count and review score.

Distance is fixed. The other two are work. That’s the job. In practice, a profile usually loses ground on relevance because of a vague primary category, an empty services list or a website link that points to a homepage saying nothing about the service people searched for, and on prominence because nobody has asked a customer for a review in months.

What we optimize

AreaWhat we do
Ownership and accessConfirm you own the profile, remove old managers, set up access for your team.
CategoriesChoose the primary category that matches your main service, plus relevant secondary ones.
Services and productsList what you actually sell, in the words customers use.
Service area or addressStorefront, service-area business or hybrid, set up the way Google requires.
Hours and attributesRegular, holiday and special hours, plus accessibility and other attributes.
Photos and videoReal photos of your team, work and premises. We can shoot them in HRM.
Posts and updatesRegular posts for offers, events and recent work, so the profile doesn’t look abandoned.
Website link and landing pageThe profile points to a page that matches it: same name, address, phone and services. If the site needs work, see local SEO.
TrackingUTM tags on the website link so calls and visits from the profile show up in your analytics.

Rules that get profiles suspended

A suspended profile disappears from Maps. Most suspensions we see come from a few rules in Google’s guidelines for representing your business:

  • Your real name only. Google says your name “should reflect your business’s real-world name” and bans unnecessary information and marketing taglines. “Smith Plumbing Halifax Best Emergency Plumber” is a suspension waiting to happen.
  • Service-area businesses hide the address. If you go to customers and don’t serve them at your address, Google says you should hide it.
  • One profile per business. Duplicates cause problems on Maps and Search. We find and merge or remove them.
  • No virtual offices. A mailbox or shared desk you don’t staff isn’t an eligible location.

Already suspended? Moving premises is a common trigger. We covered it in GBP suspended after moving and the video verification process.

Reviews: more of them, honestly

Review count and score count toward prominence, so we help you ask for them. We set up a short review link, a QR code for the counter or invoice, and a simple routine for asking after a job. We also draft replies you can approve.

What we won’t do: buy reviews, offer discounts for them, or filter out unhappy customers before asking. Those practices break Google’s policies, and removed reviews hurt more than they helped. Read more in how to get more Google reviews in Halifax and why Google reviews disappear.

Questions about Google Business Profile

How long until my profile ranks higher?

Fixes like categories and duplicates can show up within weeks. Prominence, meaning reviews, links and mentions, builds over months. We explain realistic timelines in how long local SEO takes.

Can I rank in Dartmouth if my address is in Halifax?

Distance matters, so it’s harder, but a service area plus strong local pages and reviews help. See showing up in Dartmouth, not just Halifax.

Do I need a website if I have a profile?

You can rank without one, but a matching website strengthens relevance and gives people somewhere to go after the map.

Will you need my Google password?

No. You add us as a manager on the profile and can remove us any time.

Not showing up on the map?
