Shipping comparison for Nova Scotia online sellers, focusing on Canada Post, Chit Chats, and Stallion Express availability, drop-off options, and real shipping costs.

Chit Chats vs Stallion Express vs Canada Post: What Actually Works When You Ship From Nova Scotia

Most comparisons of Chit Chats, Stallion Express and Canada Post are written from Toronto or Vancouver, where all three have depots nearby. From Nova Scotia the question is different. The first thing to settle isn’t which one is cheapest. It’s which ones you can actually hand a parcel to.

As of September 2026, the practical picture for a small Nova Scotia online store looks like this:

  • Canada Post works everywhere, with small business discounts that grow with volume.
  • Chit Chats has a branch in Bedford, a drop spot in downtown Halifax, and more than 30 drop spots across the Maritimes through Maritime Bus.
  • Stallion Express lists no drop-off locations or pickup zones in Atlantic Canada on its own site. Confirm what’s available for your postal code before building around it.

Canada Post: Don’t Pay Retail

If you’re shipping at counter prices, stop. Start here. Canada Post’s Solutions for Small Business program is free to join. Members are placed on a savings level based on the past 12 months of spending, reviewed quarterly, so discounts grow as you ship more. Canada Post advertises savings of up to 34% on domestic and up to 58% on international shipping at the top levels. A new, small shipper will start at the lowest level. That’s fine. It still beats retail.

Canada Post also has the widest reach for rural deliveries and returns, which matters for Nova Scotia customers on rural routes.

If you use Shopify, Shopify Shipping in Canada offers discounted labels from several carriers, including Canada Post, without a separate account. Compare those rates with your Solutions for Small Business rates; which one is lower depends on your level.

Chit Chats: Now Workable From the Maritimes

Chit Chats works as a consolidator: you buy postage through Chit Chats, drop the parcels at one of its locations, and Chit Chats moves them through its own network and partner carriers. For light parcels going to the U.S. in particular, sellers use it because rates can come in well below Canada Post’s.

From Nova Scotia you currently have three ways in:

  1. The Bedford branch at 1658 Bedford Highway. It’s drop-off only, closed some weekdays, with a same-day cut-off. Check the current hours before you plan a routine around it. They change.
  2. Drop spots, including one in downtown Halifax and a network of Maritime Bus locations across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. The Maritime Bus option adds a fee on top of postage.
  3. Courier pickup through Canpar, scheduled from your Chit Chats account, or mailing consolidated shipments to the hub.

One practical question to settle before switching: does your store’s integration show Chit Chats rates at checkout, or only import orders so you can buy labels afterwards? If it’s the second, you’ll be quoting customers one shipping price and paying another. That’s workable, but decide on your shipping price rules deliberately rather than discovering the gap later.

Stallion Express: Check Before You Plan Around It

Stallion is a popular choice in Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Alberta, where it has depots and pickup zones. Its website doesn’t list any Atlantic Canada locations, and its labels are generally meant to go through its own network rather than being dropped at any post office or courier counter. That’s the catch.

You’ll find videos and forum posts from Nova Scotia sellers describing workarounds using courier pickups for some Stallion services. Some may work for you, but they depend on your postal code and on Stallion’s current policies. Ask Stallion directly with your postal code before you change your store’s shipping around it.

Shipping to the U.S. Changed in 2025

Whichever service you use, U.S.-bound parcels no longer enter duty-free under the old US$800 de minimis threshold. That affects paperwork, customs data and who pays the duties, and it can matter more than the carrier’s base rate. Check that your service handles customs declarations and HS codes properly, and decide whether your U.S. customers pay duties at checkout or on delivery. Surprise duty bills lose repeat customers.

How to Compare for Your Own Store

Rate tables change often, and published comparisons go stale quickly. A better approach takes half an hour:

  1. Pick three typical shipments from your last month of orders. For example, a light envelope to Ontario, a one-kilogram box to Alberta and a small parcel to the U.S.
  2. Quote each one in every service available to you, using real dimensions and your real starting postal code.
  3. Add the hidden costs: drop-off fees, the drive to the drop-off point, pickup fees, and your time.
  4. Check tracking quality and how claims for lost parcels work.
  5. Write it all down. Then decide.

A common result is a two-service setup: Canada Post for domestic and rural parcels, and Chit Chats for light U.S. shipments.

Shipping rules and carrier integrations are part of setting up a store properly. It’s the part customers notice most when it’s wrong. When we build or fix a store as part of our e-commerce work, we set up shipping zones, rates and carrier integrations around how you actually ship.
