Google Local Services Ads in Nova Scotia: Which Trades Qualify, How They Rank, and When Search Ads Are Better
Search for a plumber or an electrician in Halifax and you’ll sometimes see a row of businesses above everything else, each with a star rating and a “Google Verified” badge. Those are Local Services Ads. You pay per lead rather than per click, and for the trades that qualify, they can sit above both the regular ads and the map.
They’re available in Canada, including Nova Scotia, for a set list of home service categories. Whether they’re worth it for you depends on three things more than on budget: whether your trade is eligible where you work, whether you have a solid base of Google reviews, and whether someone reliably answers the phone.
How Local Services Ads Differ From Regular Google Ads
| Local Services Ads | Google Search ads | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | A lead: a call, message or booking request | A click to your website |
| Where they appear | At the top, for eligible service searches | Above and below the organic results |
| What decides position | Reviews, responsiveness, hours, distance, plus budget | Bid, ad quality and landing page |
| Eligibility | Specific categories only, with screening | Almost any business |
| Control | Limited: job types, area, hours, budget | Detailed: keywords, ads, pages, schedules |
| Needs a website? | No. The lead comes straight to you | Yes. The page matters a lot |
Is Your Trade Eligible in Nova Scotia?
Google’s Canadian Local Services page lists the service categories available, including electricians, plumbers, HVAC and cleaning services. Other sources give different counts, and the list changes from time to time, so don’t rely on anyone’s article for this, including this one.
The reliable check is Google’s own eligibility tool. Enter your business category and postal code and it tells you whether Local Services Ads are available for you and what a lead is estimated to cost in your area. It takes two minutes.
If your category isn’t there, regular Search ads are your paid option. Our guide to making Search ads produce calls covers the setup that matters most.
What the Screening Involves
To get the Google Verified badge, the business goes through Google’s screening. What’s required depends on the category and location, but expect some combination of:
- proof of any licence your trade requires in Nova Scotia
- proof of insurance
- identity and business registration checks
- background checks for owners or field staff, in some categories
Screening takes time, sometimes weeks, and documents get rejected for small mismatches like a business name on the insurance certificate that doesn’t match the profile. Gather everything before you start. The name on your licence, insurance, registration and Business Profile should all agree.
What Decides Where You Show
Budget matters, but less than in regular ads. Google points to factors like:
- Reviews: your rating and how many reviews you have. Your Google Business Profile reviews carry a lot of weight here, which is why our guide to getting more reviews within the rules matters for ads too.
- Responsiveness: how often you answer calls and how quickly you reply to messages.
- Business hours: ads show more when you’re open.
- Distance: how close you are to the customer, which is the same reason a Halifax-based business can struggle in Dartmouth. See why profiles rank in one community and not the next.
- Serious complaints about your business.
The practical takeaway: a business with 90 reviews that answers every call will usually outperform one with a bigger budget, 12 reviews and a voicemail box.
What It Costs and How Lead Disputes Work
You set a weekly budget and either let Google manage the bidding or set your own per-lead bid. The cost per lead varies by trade and area, and the eligibility tool shows an estimate for yours. We won’t quote a Nova Scotia figure here, because it varies too much by category to be useful.
You’re charged for leads related to your business. If a lead is clearly invalid, such as a wrong number, a sales call or a job type you don’t offer, you can dispute it in the leads section and may receive a credit. Get into the habit of reviewing leads weekly, marking what happened with each one and disputing the invalid ones promptly.
Local Services Ads or Search Ads?
| Start with Local Services Ads if… | Start with Search ads if… |
|---|---|
| Your category is eligible and you pass screening | Your category isn’t eligible |
| You have a strong review base | You have few reviews |
| Someone answers the phone during business hours, every time | You can’t reliably answer and prefer web forms |
| You don’t have a strong website yet | You have good service pages and want control over which jobs you pay for |
| You want simple pay-per-lead | You want to target specific high-value jobs by keyword |
Many trades end up running both: Local Services Ads for the steady flow of general jobs, and a tight Search campaign for the specific high-value work, like heat pump installs or panel upgrades, that they want more of. How this fits into the wider mix for trades is covered in marketing for Halifax contractors.
Setup Mistakes That Waste Leads
- Every job type switched on. Turn off the jobs you don’t want. If you don’t do drain cleaning, don’t pay for drain cleaning leads.
- A service area wider than you’ll drive. A lead from Truro doesn’t help a business that won’t go past Bedford.
- Hours that don’t match reality. Leads arriving when nobody answers hurt your responsiveness and your position.
- Missed calls. A missed call can still become a charged lead, and it also counts against responsiveness. Route calls to someone who picks up.
- Never reviewing leads. Undisputed junk stays on your bill.
If you’re eligible, the setup and screening are usually worth doing properly once. If you’re not sure whether Local Services Ads, Search ads or both suit your trade, that’s the kind of decision we work through as part of our Google Ads management. Tell us your trade and service area, and we’ll check eligibility and the estimated lead cost with you.
